I Like Big Buns and I Cannot Lie

{An homage to Sir-Mix-A-Lot.  Well, sort of.}

My apologies if you get this song stuck in your head, but I'm obsessed with big buns ~ really!

An explanation...My daughter and I were chatting on the phone recently and she told me that she'd discovered a way to style her hair into a big bun.  She called it a "sock bun," and described it as a donut.  Ha!  I told her I'd just bought one online!  It's freaky but sometimes I think we share a (silly) brain:)  Anyway, when she and the Fiance visited us last weekend, we decided to give them a try ~ here's our tutorial-ish...

First, you put your hair up into a pony tail:

Then you slip the donut over your pony tail...

...and move the donut to the end of your pony tail, leaving just the tip outside the donut:

Finally, you roll your pony down over the donut...

...until it touches your head:

No bobby pins needed!  No hairspray needed!  Our buns stayed in place all day long.

Ta da:

Of course when our do's were complete we danced into the family room to model for Captain Project and The Fiance, singing our version of Sir Mix-A-Lot (yes, we crack ourselves up!).  The men rolled their eyes.  At our singing?  Our buns?  Our dancing?  Probably all three, but whatev, I love the big buns!  So fun!
In case you want to give it a try, here's how to make your own:

Share YOUR thoughts on big buns (or pop culture, mainstream, silly rap songs) and you're automatically entered to win this month's fun, free blog giveaway, a steering wheel cover from Whoopsie Daisies.  Drawing is 9/30.  Good luck!

I cut those things in half and use them to make the back victory rolls for my 40s styles! They are so handy, no? You are cute!

Hello Cindy,
I am going to have to make the homemade version of the “Big Buns” with Destiny. Being goofy and sharing the small things at home make the best memories.

That's funny, my hair is so long that I don't need help making a big bun, All of my buns are big! LOL It kind of reminds me of some hair things I bought years ago that are kind of like slap bracelets and you roll them into your hair the same way to make a donut type bun.

Everything old is new again. In the 70's I had the very same hair style complete with the little brown donut. How cute that the two of you have donuts.

You guys look ADORABLE! I have short hair now, so no buns for me, but even if I had my hair in it's longer state, I generally can't do these types of things because there isn't enough of it! It is SUPER thin! Oh...and yes, I will have that song in my head from not until eternity. HA!

Buns must be in the air as I am knitting a bun cover for a little ballerina!

Thanks for including photos! I tried this today, but mine doesn't look as neat as yours. Does it take practice or is just because my hair is super-long (waist-length) that it looks messy?

I had one of those things MANY years ago! But I never mastered the art of using it. I don't think it came with instructions. I love your post, it's so full of fun!

Hey there! I just found your blog recently and had to comment on this adorable post! You and your daughter are just darling. I love the buns, in your hair that is. ;)

My 13 year old daughter is in a local musical production and needs to wear her hair in a high bun. Could you tell me where you bought your bun donut? I tried the sock kind and it's not holding well enough to get thru 2 hours of singing and dancing. I also only have white socks and it shows in my daughter's dark hair.

Thanks so much for any help! I can't wait to read all of your posts from the beginning.

@ Sarah H ~ thanks for discovering my blog:) I can't remember exactly where I bought the hair donut but it was on Amazon. Just do a search for hair donut and a bunch of option will appear. Good luck:)
