Shopping Cart Liner Tutorial

Remember me mentioning the great score I made at the flea ~ this vintage shopping cart for $10?

Well, I thought she looked a little naked so I dressed her up a bit with a liner made from a vintage, twin-sized bed sheet.

Because I couldn't find a tutorial online, I've put one together here in case you'd like to make one...

1.  Measure your cart ~ the front and back, sides and bottom and cut your fabric, adding a 1/2" for seams.

2.  Cut another piece of your fabric for a pocket (to hold your wallet, keys and phone), pin and sew to what will be the back inside of your liner:

3.  With right sides together, pin the front and back panels and the side panels to the bottom panel and sew.

4.  Match up the four sides, pin and stitch together.

5.  Repeat steps 1-4 again for your liner (you can use a different fabric but I chose to use the same for both).

6.  With right sides together, insert your one liner into the other and place them both into your cart, folding over the tops a bit to prevent them from falling down into your cart.

7.  Cut and sew six ties, 2"x24" and fold them in half, open ends facing down.

8.  Place your ties between the two liners, pin in place and sew along the top and leaving a 3" opening.

9.  Turn your liners right side out, stitch closed your 3" opening, place back into your cart and tie your bows.

10.  Step back and admire your work.  Easy and pretty fast.

Hmmmmm.  Needs a little something ~ lace, pom poms?

Yep, pom poms!

A simple face lift for this vintage beauty!

I've already taken her for a spin!

If you end up making a cart liner yourself, I'd sure love to hear about it!  I'm linking up today with Heather at The Vintage Sheet Blog ~ she has lots of other ideas for upcycling your stash of vintage sheets.

The Vintage Sheet Blog

Happy Friday all!

Wanted to let you know that I'm a guest blogger on Heather's blog today.  I discovered The Vintage Sheet Blog a while ago and am a huge fan!  Since I'm a huge collector of vintage linens and use them in many of my Retro Revival products, her blog is a real inspiration for me!

I hope you'll pay her blog a visit ~ you'll see the Pot Mitts tutorial I wrote and have a chance to win the pair I made (using vintage pillowcases, of course) for her post!

Hope you have a wonderful weekend.  I'll be busy sewing another stack of these for my upcoming show!

Sheets Happen {Vintage Sheets & Pillowcases}

Some of my favorite aprons are the ones I made by upcycling vintage bedsheets and pillow cases.

Are you thinking "Eew...vintage sheets?!"?  Please don't fret, I'm a very discerning buyer and after purchasing, carefully and thoroughly launder them so that they're bright, clean and fresh before I begin cutting!

I rescue all sorts of vintage linens from flea markets, antique and thrift shops, and estate sales.   My newest source is Meegs from Pieces of Meegs on Etsy!

This short stack is a sampling of what Meegs has found for me:

Gorgeous, right?!  And when I say, "Found for me," I mean it!  Meegs is like my own personal shopper.  She Etsy convos me, asking me what I need and then goes out and finds it!  I LOVE her!  Go, now, and check out her shop!

Using this little vintage birdy piece from Meegs, I arranged some coordinating fabrics...

...to create this:

From my "Meegs stash" I also sewed these...

Have you used vintage sheets or pillowcases to create something?  Do tell and you'll be entered to win this month's blog giveaway:

I'll randomly draw a winner on June 30th ~ good luck!

Wash, Dry, Fold, Repeat

Recently my mother gave me a huge stash of her old linens - yay!  Most of them originally belonged to her mother, my grandmother Lela Rosie, and I am thrilled to have them.  One of my favorites is this vintage clothespin keeper:

It now hangs in my otherwise "average" laundry room.  Average I say because it's so small and lacks an adequate amount of storage.  Despite its shortcomings, I've done my best to make it a cheerful place:

(Painted it a celadon green and added a colorful rug)

We hung a bunch of kitshcy laundry signs ~ they make me smile:

(Had to have the one on the bottom - looks like Twyla!)

And switched out the knobs on the cabinets:

One fine day, my dream laundry room will look something like this:

(Jackie Terrell designed this space for House Beautiful)

It will be huge!  With a big table for folding laundry and big enough to set up my ironing board, which by the way, I use so often that it's usually set up in my kitchen ~ ugh!

It will also be brightly colored.  Not a fan of wallpaper, I can stencil the walls to mimick this beautifully decorated laundry room:

Oh, and my dream laundry room will also feature a fabulous chandelier, maybe like this one I found on http://www.betterhomesandgarden.com/:

Why not, right?!

Until then, I've got a few loads waiting...

I've had several of you ask where I buy my fabric.  Of course, my vintage fabric aprons are made with found 1950's tablecloths but I find a lot of my new fabrics at J&O Fabric Store.  J&O has an amazing selection of fabu fabrics ~ like the one I used for my "Beat It" apron ~ much greater than most retail stores.  Check them out and I'm sure you'll find many irrestible!

Do you have a fabu laundry room?  Do tell!  Here, of course, and you'll automatically be entered to win this month's giveaway!

Each of your comments counts as one entry and if you mention my giveaway on YOUR blog, you'll get an extra five entries!  Good luck:)
